Beltane은 Beltaine, Bealteinne 등 여러 이름으로 전해지지만 스코틀랜드 게일어로 Bealtuinn은 5월이라는 뜻입니다. 원래 의미는 '벨의 불', 그러니까 태양의 신 벨(라틴어로는 벨레누스)에게 바치는 불이라는 뜻입니다.
