The ancient Irish believed that a comet in the night's sky represented the Spear of Assal, the weapon wielded by Lugh Lamfada. Once thrown he commanded it, and it flew until he called it back, hunting blood: thus comets were an ill omen.

Lugh Lamfada fostered with Manannan mac Lir, Lord of Tir na nOg. An daoine sidhe, a Gaelic name for the fairies, reside there when they do not reside in Ireland: Lugh thus learned his many skills from the fairies, a useful trade indeed.
