Many insane innovations to cover one monumental insanity that's dams! Habitats cannot be confined, they exist in their continuity.

Anadromous fish species must swim from salty seas over into freshwater rivers in order to spawn; that's one of the most unnatural things about dams.

Even if you don't live in the you may have a sturgeon in your backyard! (figuratively speaking unless your backyard is underwater) - many other species of sturgeon found in the US are anadromous, meaning they spend time in both fresh + saltwater

Eulachon(Thaleichthys pacificus): The largest Pacific North American Smelt, this anadromous fish is also known as the "candlefish" because of its oily flesh- prepared properly, a dried eulachon can actually be used as a candle! Illuminating. 10/10

I had the privilege of being part of a fish and wildlife snorkel survey this summer to enumerate summer steelhead in the Skykomish River! I painted this during a work camping trip to survey the entire anadromous section north fork. It’s very hard work but sooo pretty!

(I'm allowed one dumb looking one right?😂)
Most salmon are anadromous - big word for being born in freshwater, then migrate to the ocean, and then return to spawn.
