'The Ladies Diary or The Woman's Almanack' is an interesting artifact to explore life in the year 1740 - but this one is extra special. It was used 20 years later by the Presbyterian church in Mansfield's Old Meeting House to record baptisms. (RG 4/2486)

The cover is called a 'limp binding' due to the flexible nature of the material, and as the fur has not been scraped the material is known as 'hair vellum.' Though common in the medieval period, its survival to the modern day is rare. One of our treasures!

We have many documents made from Parchment, but very few are as special as this book from E101/376. This account book of the King's Wardrobe dates from 1315-1316 and still has the original calfskin binding complete with fur!
