Historic spindle whorls from England and Wales can be decorative, but tend to follow a predictable design scheme of petals, raised pellets, and heavily stylised script, some of which may be fantastical. They all tend to be radially symmetrical, prob. to spin cleanly.

Spindle whorls are items that detectorists often gather in large amounts but are not often recorded without encouragement from the FLO. There are stories of unseen bucket caches, often with the explanation that 'we didn’t think you’d want to see them'
