In jungen Jahren war er sogar Jakobiner. Landschaften der Alpen war sein bevorzugtes Motiv. Er ließ sich in Rom nieder und hatte viele Schüler. Leider verstarb er arm und wurde am deutschen Friedhof/Vatikan begraben
