Smart by Kim Slater is a detective story with a difference. When a homeless man dies the police don't seem to care, but Kieran is convinced he was murdered. At home he has his mother's violent partner to contend with. Not an easy read, but a worthwhile one

is all about tonight! I’m going with my niece’s other hot favourite, “Zita the Spacegirl” by writer/illustrator Ben Hatke. My niece devoured this series and has been a fan of his books ever since. She loves any type of book, but especially illustrated!

The O Brien Press Panda readers are good for younger readers. They are good as read aloud books too. There are lots of illustrations to bridge the gap between picture book and novel. There are 30 books in the series and most are written by Irish authors.

The SEA SAW by is a beautifully illustrated, emotive story about the loss of a well loved teddy bear on a day out. It's a lovely book to initiate discussions about favourite toys & possessions & also takes a sensitive look at loss & grief.

As a huge fan of intelligent and well-crafted I'd like to recommend these three titles by outstanding contributors to this genre:
1) 's 'Shh, we have a plan'
(1/3)

My recommendation is Gringer the Whinger written by Jane Landy and illustrated by Sheena Dempsey. Gringer is an annoying Skerries dragon who hogs mum’s attention and drives dad bonkers, but the kids love his visits! A big favourite with my niece!

A Brief History of Life on Earth by Clemence DuPont takes the reader on a journey through time. Page by page, the evolution of the world’s animals is revealed, with simple, striking illustrations making it all
the more engaging.

The Tide by Clare Helen Welsh, Illustrated by Ashling Lindsay
It’s not often that a picture book makes me tear up, but this one certainly did. It’s the story of a girl with a Grandad who forgets things, but she loves him anyway.
