One of the most remarkable portraits in #BritishBaroque @tate. Lady Elizabeth Cromwell by Kneller (1702) has the feel of something produced at the end of the century rather than the start. Great rococo frame though.
Antonio Verrio’s ‘Sea Triumph’ (1674) presented Charles II as Neptune, bringing peace from chaos. It was also his pitch for royal business. It worked: he won the contract to paint 26 ceilings at Windsor Castle #BritishBaroque
The best picture @Tate #BritishBaroque, Kneller's portrait of Matthew Prior
Lots to see at the excellent #BritishBaroque @Tate - so much in fact I’ll go back for a 2nd visit. Many new discoveries and rarely seen art works, revealing richness of late-Stuart culture.
Very proud that ‘British Baroque: Power and Illusion’ has opened at Tate Britain, and is looking rather glorious. Wonderful to work with fellow co-curators Tabitha Barber and Tom Batchelor, and with @amyplusthree and everyone else who was involved. #britishbaroque @Tate
Women, art and science have always worked together. 18thC Mary Somerset drew beautiful succulents she brought to Britain for first time. The one in your sitting room originated here. See at pioneering #BritishBaroque exhibitn @Tate Britain opening tmrw #WomenInSTEM #WomenInCircus
