Day 10: Megacerops coloradensis
This huge Brontothere lived in North America during the Eocene epoch. Despite looking like a rhinoceros they were more closely related to modern horses!

Spirit World
Living on isolated islands, a small pig sized Brontothere with very mobile lips live in their villages that seem to resemble fantasy hobbits, the Honse are sophont ungulates with their own way of life like cultures, myths and society.
Paleo Fact!
Megacerops (Large Horned Face) is a brontothere from Late Eocene North America! It possessed a distinct set of two blunt horns on its snout, with male individuals having larger ones than females did! It's speculated that the males- (1/2)

A closer relative to Embolo would be Aktautitan, who forms a sister group to Embolo and its relatives. This animal is known from very complete individuals preserved mired, with much stockier limbs then other brontotheres, resembling hippos, Toxodon or Teleoceras
There's 2 taxa that might make good references for Embolo. One is Rhinotitan, a tall browser from the mid Eocene of China. This probably represents the common ancestor to both groups of derived brontotheres that crossed over from Asia to NA
Well seeing as we're all still here on #FossilFriday, here's some vaguely organized thoughts on reconstructing the largest, latest surviving Brontotheres 🧵

@CrownGamer901 Yeah, Chalicotheres & Brontotheres are both closer to horses than to other perissodactyls (despite the latter’s resemblance). Both appeared around the Eocene (56-33.9), but chalicotheres lived until the early Pleistocene while brontotheres appeared and died in that entirety.
New design! Brontotheres were rhinoceros-like animals that lived about 56–34 million years ago (during the Eocene). They're related to rhinos, horses, and tapirs and came in a variety of shapes and sizes. Included in our latest Sticker Pack: https://t.co/5ib7tCDwcm
Just saw the #trexdiscoverycentre in Eastend SK last week and I’m really bugging out about Brontothere proportions! Those legs are crazy long and gracile; not at all like most reconstructions which are basically copy-and-paste rhinos
Many of the pictures in “Album of PA” are burned into my memory, including the bloody cave bear & my favorite brontothere image of all time.
When I think of Aepycamelus (nee Alticamelus) I think of Ruth’s lanky beast, pounding back the predators with its hammering hooves.
Tfw Brontotheres are closer to horses than to rhinos, but everyone just draws them as a white rhino clone.
The awesome skull of the Brontothere, Megacerops. Distantly related to horses and rhinos, this beast lived in North America around 35 million years ago! #FossilFriday

A fairly old drawing of a #megacerops. I wonder what's made them so angry... Drawn in pencil, colored in Clip Studio Paint.

Subject of my next scene: one of my favorite Cenozoic mammals, the Late Eocene brontotheriid Embolotherium. Wasn't planning on this color scheme, but I kinda love it
