Pourquoi-Pas by French maritime artist Marin Marie

Launched in 1907, she was used by Jean-Baptiste Charcot for his polar expeditions. When she was lost in a storm off Iceland in 1936, Charcot, then 69 was lost along with all bar one of the crew.

Jane spent two years at Salpêtrière hospital under Dr. Jean-Martin Charcot, a neuropsychiatrist. Fashionable members of society who, fascinated by deviation from the norm, disfigurement & disease, were able to observe surgery and take part in fancy dress balls with the patients.

J.-A. Martin, intendant et cinéaste, meurt soudainement d'une hémorragie cérébrale à bord du Commandant-Charcot, à l'approche du cap de Bonne-Espérance. Il repose au cimetière du Cap. La base de Port-Martin sera nommée en son hommage. (4/4)
