ART GOAL MET!
I saw the last of the 3 versions of one of my favorite paintings - Watson and the Shark (by John S. Copley). Last summer, I saw the original in DC and his replica in Boston, and now I've seen the third in Detroit, today!
Let's add the Jin version to make four!🤣🦈
Dramatic rescue of 14-year-old orphan/cabin boy Brook Watson from shark attack in Havana Harbour ~ he survived, though with loss of a leg, and later became Lord Mayor of London, chairman of Lloyds and director of the Bank of England (JS Copley, 1778, MFA Boston)

Benjamin Franklin, born #OTD 1706, was friends with several parliamentarians. One, John Walsh, MP for #Worcester, was a keen scientist and shared his findings on the properties of electric eels with Franklin, for which the @royalsociety awarded him the Copley Gold Medal

Copley being like “Sure I could paint all the classic tropes but, to hell with it, I’m painting a shark attack in Havana”.

John Singleton Copley, ‘Watson and the Shark’ (1778)
A nice portrait I hadn't seen until now featuring one Captain Patrick Campbell, c. 1775, by John Singleton Copley. While not a wartime portrait, this gives a good indication of how British officers in the RevWar dressed, eg. not always yards of lace and gold tape.
The Bowlers also owned an 11-acre country seat in nearby Portsmouth. As depicted by Copley, Mrs. Bowler presents a garland of painterly blooms that recall the variety of domestic and exotic plants grown in the estate’s renowned gardens and greenhouses
