Struggling to find primary sources on this, but apparently Coturnix quail were domesticated in Japan, where the samurai class bred them for their singing abilities!

The singing quail line was lost during WWII, which is such a shame, I really want to hear them sing!

Macaronesia islands once had a diversity of quail species, such as the flightless Coturnix lignorum, from Madeira. All these insular forms disappeared once these islands were colonized.
