St. Philomena, Martyr (304)

Her name, Philomena, was inscribed upon her tomb. At age thirteen, she consecrated herself to God. The Emperor Diocletian wanted to marry her, and when she refused to be his wife, he repeatedly tortured her. Afterwards, she was finally beheaded.

SS. Felix, Simplicius, Faustinus and Beatrice

Holy Pontiff Felix III was martyred in Tuscany in the time of the Arians (365). Simplicius and Faustinus, denounced as Christians, were put to death under Diocletian in 304. Beatrice, the sister, was arrested and strangled in prison.

The other unit that was promoted to this rank was Jovian (Jupiter) Seniores, also made up of loyal men from Illyricum, the home province of Diocletian and a place where many soldier-emperors emerged during the 3rd century crisis.

Bede records in his Ecclesiastical History of the English Nation how, during a persecution by Diocletian, St Alban, the first English martyr, surrendered himself in place of a Christian priest, and so unbaptised by water, attained a baptism of blood.

St. Donatian and St. Rogatian, Martyrs (287)

At Nantes, in Brittany, the blessed brothers were cast into prison under the Emperor Diocletian for their constancy in the faith. They were placed on the rack and tortured. They were finally pierced by a soldier's lance and beheaded.

St. George, Martyr (304)

The Emperor Diocletian had at first favored this soldier, but when St. George reproached him for his cruelty, he was thrown into prison and finally put to death with such great cruelty, that he is called the "Great Martyr."

St. Januarius, Bishop of Beneventum, and his Companions

St. Januarius, his deacons, and others were beheaded at Puteoli during the persecution of Diocletian in 305. Some of the blood of St. Januarius, preserved in a phial, liquefies each year when placed near the martyrs head.

Today we say happy Birthday to the country of which by tradition was founded on 3rd September AD301, when Saint Marinus, escaping the Diocletian Persecution, fled to Monte Titano, where he built a small church, establishing the city & state of San Marino.

Sts. Tiburtius and Susanna, Martyrs

St. Tiburtius, a subdeacon, son of the prefect of Rome, being accused of professing the Christian religion, was beheaded in 286. St. Susanna, a holy virgin, refused to marry the son of Diocletian, and was beheaded after cruel torments in 295.
