A centuries-old altar cloth from a rural English church turned out to be the 'lost dress' of Elizabeth I

On investigation the cloth was found to have skirt seams, & is the only known surviving example of dresses.

Robert Devereux, 2nd Earl of Essex, was charged with insubordination at a special hearing at York House. After which, he was ordered to remain under house arrest.

The scholar & diplomat was educated at Magdalen College, Oxford. He served Queen Elizabeth I as a Gentleman Usher.
