Today's @AgainstLore w/ @iszi_lawrence: Tattoos, piercings & jewellery in the ancient world. The first 3 #Fayum portraits here are Roman boys (!) only distinguished from girls by their lack of earrings. P.S. surviving ancient earrings def for pierced ears! https://t.co/vJHCMkq0M4

Es espectacular el reflejo blanco del pendiente.
Vermeer no conocía los retratos de El Fayum, pues aún no se habían descubierto. Pero esta es una buena #AnalogíaDeArte.
Fayum Mummy portrait of a man wearing a beautiful gold wreath of ivy, ca. 2nd Century AD. These portraits really affect me. #Roman #Egypt

Faces of the Roman world
1) Italians from Pompeii (60 AD)
2) Egyptians from Fayum Mummies (1st cent. BC - 3rd cent. AD)
3) The Christ Pantocrator St. Catherine’s Monastery, one of the oldest depictions of Christ. Can be used as proxy for what a Levantine looked like. (500s AD)
Marble is porous and stainable, coating of sculptures with untinted wax for protection goes way back. As does encaustic painting; nothing much is preserved from classical easel painting, save for the fayum mummy portraits.

Since Hyraxes are very awesome. I present to you yet another extinct Pliohyracid. Meet Antilohyrax, a hyrax from the Late Eocene of Fayum, Egypt. A hyrax that resembled a gazelle, had tusks and a low metabolism for an animal its size. It was a cursorial browser.

Or Jesus might have had a short 'philosopher's beard' as in this 3rd century AD fresco of Moses and the burning bush from Dura Europa or this 2nd C Fayum portrait. #WhatDidJesusLookLike #TimeTravelDiaries

Ok, so I digress from all things #Tolkien for a moment - but there can be few things in world art/history of images as stunning and immediate as the encaustic mummy portraits from 1st-3rd century Fayum. Here's four particularly affecting examples...#Fayum #portraitart
A #selfportrait! I drew from a lot of sources here; Girl With A Pearl Earring, the Fayum Mummies, religious icons, and Mucha! #art
