In doing self-portraits for the past few months, I have been researching artists that have used themselves as a model. I'm very happy to have found work. So many emotions are shown in her use of light and shadow, and in her expressive mark-making.

Käthe Kollwitz's work is suffused with guilt, grief and trauma but also depicts the effects of poverty, hunger and war on the working class. Her work is vivid and painful.

Have you noticed…that many of the works in the exhibition feature shadowy figures, which Kollwitz uses as a symbol for death?
