It's time for my Today is 米, rice.

I've found that it works really well to think of 米 as a cluster of rice grains. Many kanji are like that. If you have a different way to remember it, please share! ^_^

I remember this kanji because it reminds me of 先(sen), as in 先生(sensei), referring to "one who came before". 元 is younger and more energetic, like they were when they were young.

The symbolism of this kanji is just about perfect in my opinion - the sun 日 paired with blue 青. I can't help but feel cheered up by it (especially given the last couple weeks). ^_^

It includes 門(gate) and 耳(ear), so I remember it as "you listen through the gate with your ears".

Also, this kanji originally meant to 'news' which is why it's in 新聞, newspaper.

Even though it's not actually the kanji for door, 戸, it looks pretty similar, and that gives a mental hook to help remember this with. A left and right 戸 make a 門!

I usually think of this based on its elements 山 (mountain) and 石 (stone), so mountainous stone.

It originally meant market, but this kanji is used to refer to cities, such as 市民 (city inhabitant), 都市 (municipal), and 市街 (urban area).

I love the symbolism of this kanji. To me, it looks like clouds above a mountain above a 'gap' which is the valley.

One thing I noticed is that the 'direction' kanji are used in a lot of Japanese place names. 北 is part of 北海道 (Hokkaido) and 北岳 (Kitadake).
