The cord in her hand is a kumihimo that Tsukuyo made for him. Gintoki being a country samurai, he most likely wasn't "allowed" to wear it, but he does have something similar in this art.
She made for him to support him, as some designs were meant to give the samurai a long life.

I also feel like I should mention for this build I'm making all of the cord by hand! It's time consuming but I really want to incorporate as many Japanese techniques into this build as I can!!! It's called Kumihimo and the smaller 13" braid took me about 2 1/2 hours!
