If you need smooth application & shine with basic oil paint from Michael’s (or wherever else), adding a drop of linseed oil will help.

Painting left - none whatsoever.
Painting right - 1 drop for each color.

After some editing (actual work!) I returned to the P-40. Getting closer to right.

Oils handle differently than the “open” acrylics, but not so much that I am stymied. I am doing working with straight pigment…not yet really using linseed or other mediums.

At the opening of ‘Silent Testimony’ in 2015, I realised that Margaret Yeaman would never be able to see her portrait. We cried as she leant in to touch the dry paint & smell the linseed oil. for God’s sake, where is her pension?

- not blending? new layer is like a new canvas

A2: My favorite place is tapping into that creative headspace that let’s me experiment and be creative. It’s charcoal, linseed oil, and graphite. It’s messy and liberating to reach a point where each mark is not precious and overthought.
