In 1790, 3 London newspapers speculated on the living situation of the Ladies of Llangollen. In the St James’s Chronicle an article titled “Extraordinary Female Affection” was published saying:

Before many women Anne chose as her travel companions, and instead of her sister Marian, aunt Anne was one of her 1st travel buddies. They went together to Paris and London in 1819 for a month, and to Wales in 1822 for 2 weeks visiting also the Ladies of Llangollen. ... ⬇️

The French writer Colette (1873-1954) owned a picture of the Ladies of Llangollen, a print like this one. She wrote: 'I would like to have known the faces of these two ladies as they were when they were young and radiant with mutual trust.'

The Ladies disliked having their portraits taken and this print (also ) is based on sketches made secretly by Mary Parker during a visit to their home at Plas Newydd, Llangollen in 1828. Eleanor Butler died in 1829 and Sarah Ponsby in 1831.
