HOLLYWOOD STEPS OUT (1941) Tex Avery’s classic mockery of nearly every star in Hollywood. Excellent caricatures by Ben Shenkman, and dead-on voicework largely provided by teenager Kent Rogers. Amazing they got away with the risqué bubble dance bit.

CEILING HERO (1940) Silly airplane travelogue spoof by Tex Avery, with stellar background paintings and effects animation. Funniest gag: the stunt planes getting tied together by smoke trails.

PORKY’S GARDEN (1937) This Tex Avery short contains a nice performance by Italian character actor George Humbert and a snort-inducing parody of rival cartoon series POPEYE! Complete with mutterings that don’t match the lip movements!

CONGO JAZZ (1930) Bosko goes hunting in darkest Africa. This delightful film is the first to feature Johnny Murray as Bosko’s voice. Nice early character animation, and Frank Marsales’ arrangement of “Giving It This and That” swings.
