Halloween is now over and it looks like while we were distracted snuck away with the beer. I had a change to try Major Tom from recently and it's another nice addition to the collection.

"N" is for Noturus exilis, the slender madtom! These cuties are a small catfish in the family Ictaluridae, the North American freshwater catfishes. The image on the right was painted by me!

Not a lot of photos of the Scioto Madtom (pronounced extinct this month), as it was last seen in 1957.

Scioto Madtom
Sorry, I forgot to add it the day I painted it. You'd think I'd remember after so many! This catfish only got to 2 1/4 inches. From one spot in Ohio. Captive breeding did not work.

Baby Yoda Catfish?!

Pygmy madtoms eat whatever food is around them in abundance, including insect larvae. They’re believed to be crepuscular, meaning only active in twilight.
