Angel from Aurora Consurgens, c.1420. The Aurora consurgens is an alchemical treatise of the 15th century famous for the rich illuminations that accompany it in some manuscripts.
@archaeologyart Snails feature in some illustrations in Medieval illuminated manuscripts. The knight vs snail motif was common, but modern scholars can’t determine it’s meaning. I like to think it’s just a joke. Armored knight vs armored snail. But who knows?
