Neysa McMein was an illustrator and poster artist who designed magazine covers from 1923 through 1927. General Mills commissioned her to create the image of "Betty Crocker", a fictional housewife whose brand name was intended to be a seal of solid middle-class domestic values.

Neysa McMein was a highly successful artist between 1923 and 1937. In 1932-1933 she was the magazine’s film reviewer. In 60 covers for the Post, Neysa McMein shows portraits of young women each with their own stylish identity.

McMein was an amazing illustrator who (among many other things) painted the initial likeness of Betty Crocker for General Mills in 1936 (shown here), which the company used for nearly 20 years.
