Touhou Luna Nights, a beautfitul looking sprite game that helped motivate me to get more invested into touhou. The games movement and combat are super fun and help make it a pretty challenging metroidvania. I also like timestop abilities a lot and they were super well used here
Tomb Raider (2013): very good game and a great modern take on Lara’s character. the gameplay feels like Uncharted mixed with the exploration of Metroidvania. can’t way to play the rest of the trilogy. also got it for 3 bucks so it was a steal.

Group one says Metroidvanias are specifically games inspired by SOTN, which added RPG elements. Metroid games have no RPG elements and thus are not Metroidvania.
Group two says Metroidvanias are any side-scrolling platformer with one large map instead of levels. Like Pitfall.
