Non serviam is Latin for "I will not serve". The phrase is attributed to #Satan, who is said to have spoken these words to express rejection to serve God in his kingdom. In modern times "non serviam" developed into a phrase used by modernists to express rejection of conformity
“Georgian Bay, November", 1921, (NGC) & “November”, 1922, (Hart House) by A.Y. Jackson, first president of the Beaver Hall Group. He often wrote to newspapers defending the modernists, using pseudonyms such as Cadium, Rose Madder, and Sap Green — the colours in his paintbox.

“Sugar Shack” by Adam Sherriff Scott. A self-confessed “old-fashioned” painter, he would often criticize Picasso and abstract art. In 1943 he added his name to an open letter denouncing the inclusion of Modernists in the AAM’s Spring Ex. The Beaver Hall Group and Its Legacy C.14.
Léon Spilliaert. He had ad an affinity he felt with writers Edgar Allan Poe and Friedrich Nietzsche.
His work characterised by dramatic perspectives and a quiet luminescence. His images of solitude align him with European modernists such as Edvard Munch and Vilhelm Hammershøi.
