Non serviam is Latin for "I will not serve". The phrase is attributed to who is said to have spoken these words to express rejection to serve God in his kingdom. In modern times "non serviam" developed into a phrase used by modernists to express rejection of conformity

“Sugar Shack” by Adam Sherriff Scott. A self-confessed “old-fashioned” painter, he would often criticize Picasso and abstract art. In 1943 he added his name to an open letter denouncing the inclusion of Modernists in the AAM’s Spring Ex. The Beaver Hall Group and Its Legacy C.14.
