Orthocones were a group of chambered nautiloids that spanned a long period of time, from the Late Cambrian to the Early Triassic. There has been a long history of throwing all these under one group, such as Orthoceras or Cameroceras, but they were actually pretty varied!

I don't tend to take many photos as they often don't come out well but had to take one of this polished handaxe which includes a fossil orthocone, an extinct group of squid-like cephalopods

Cameroceras, also known as the giant orthocone, was an ancient cephalopod and potentially the largest animal of its time - and a funny guy with a hat

Another of my WWD entry is for the giant Ordovician Cone, the Orthocone, is amazing that this depiction still holds up well compared to other docs as this has the most accurate features speculated including 10 arms, adhesive ridges and simple eyes. Is not perfect but still good.

Estimated at ~6m long, giant orthocone cephs in the Cameroceras genus were some of the largest in the late Ordovician/early Silurian!
