“Women, we must do the work ourselves. We must have an independent women’s movement...”
The Women’s Social and Political Union - the leading women’s suffrage campaign group - was formed #OnThisDay 1903 at the home of the Pankhursts.
Annie’s sister Nell moved to #Bingley & worked in a shop. An organiser of the local Women’s Social & Political Union, she was arrested at the #HouseOfCommons & jailed for 2 weeks in 1907. With 2 of the Pankhursts, she spoke to 100,00 at the 1907 #ShipleyGlen suffragettes meeting https://t.co/hiTn7pRL7v

Emmeline Pankhurst was born today (July 15th) in 1858 into a politically active family. Her mother used to read them 'Uncle Tom's Cabin' as a bedtime story (for kids -yikes!) She successfully campaigned by her impassioned speech and her intense hunger strikes.

It's graduation time at LSE. Did you know that in 1906 Christabel Pankhurst got a first class degree in law from the University of Manchester? At the time women were not allowed to practice law, so she began campaigning for women’s suffrage and equality.
