On this day in 1940, Howard Florey and his team of scientists, including Ernst Chain, Arthur Duncan Gardner, Norman Heatley, M. Jennings, J. Orr-Ewing and G. Sanders published their laboratory results showing the in vivo bactericidal action of penicillin.

Born #OTD 1910: biochemist Dorothy Crowfoot Hodgkin, pioneer of X-ray #crystallography, won the #NobelPrize in #Chemistry in 1964 for her work in establishing the structure of vitamin B12 & #penicillin. In 1969, she solved the 3D shape of the #insulin molecule. #WomenInStem
In May 1945 Dorothy Hodgkin figured out the molecular structure of penicillin. In 1964 she won the Nobel Prize for Chemistry for her work in X-ray crystallography. “I was captured for life by chemistry and by crystals.” She was also a socialist & activist. https://t.co/iELgCL30S4
