Today in Comics History: Rube Goldberg, a cartoonist whose name lives on as the creator of impossibly complicated cartoon inventions, was born on July 4, 1883. (A peripatetic talent, he also created scores of other cartoons.)

Beep beep. It's the birthday of Gillis van Coninxloo (1544-1607), the peripatetic Flemish landscape painter. A big influence on Bruegel, Coninxloo painted forests that were mysterious and dreamy. Were he around today, I reckon he'd be working for Disney or on Lord of the Rings
