After an Early Permian down pour washed nutrients from the surrounding forests into a shallow lagoon, a following heat spell caused an algal bloom of cyanobacteria. This can become toxic and reduce oxygen in the water. This poor Prionosuchus, a large temnospondyl, succumbed to it

Part 5 of my Ancient Werebeasts, featuring a Mastodonsaurus and a Prionosuchus. The younger one loved with a mermaid, and paid the price for it. Cursed by the mermaid, never again could Wereamphibians step into the sea.

Drawing underrated prehistoric animals 6/?: Prionosuchus, a very large temnospondyl (amphibian) from the early Permian period. It’s shaped a bit like a gavial, and I think it’s an interesting case of convergent evolution.
