Belantsea, a tiny cartilaginous ratfish (Holocephali) from Bear Gulch, Montana. It was an agile reef fish with a beak of "fangs". It's unclear whether it moved like a tang, frogfish, or stingray given enlarged fins and flattened fossils

Harpagofututor, another Carboniferous "eel" related to ratfish/ghost sharks (Holocephali), with toothplates for shell-crushing. The name ("grappling hook copulator") is for the males' head-clasper "antlers", which females bit during mating! (Nix Illustration)

So I really wanted to do Freya, but wasn’t sure what fish to do. I wanted to do a shark but then I typed in rat fish for kicks, and there is one!!!! So Freya is a Ratfish/chimera/ghostshark.

Did you know that Spotted Ratfish (Hydrolagus colliei) have a RETRACTIBLE BARBED PROTRUSION ON THEIR FOREHEAD TO HELP THEM HOLD ON WHEN MATING?!

This has to be one of the coolest adaptations I've ever heard of!

Spotted ratfish are among the deepest-living fishes in Monterey Bay.
They are related to sharks and are considered the missing link between the bony and cartilainous fishes because they have the characteristics of both.
