Perhaps one reason why overseas readers struggle with shonen/shojo/seinen/josei manga labels is b/c western comics publishing is more stratified by age / gender target readerships?

tapas
-big potential readership
-mobile focused, so scale down your files to 940px width, most readers are app users
-which means you've got to censor the hell out of your work if you want to reach as many people as possible

the top 3 series on LINE Manga in Japan already offer up some interesting differences between the JP & US readership of webtoons - 2 out of 3 are action/fighting series (seinen/shonen vibes), while hits the US webtoon sweetspot: romance/drama stories.

I’ve been writing about manga publishing biz for a while, but webtoon publishing in N. America is something i’ve been curious about lately. Content & readership-wise, it overlaps with manga while being distinctly different in its business model and its mobile-first approach

It all feels more like an ill-conceived trolling and less like a legitimate attempt to expand readership demographics.

Or some people taking advantage of editorial being asleep at the wheel and/or too underpaid to give a shit.

Inside the magazine are the results of the series characters popularity poll that you can see in the next images. Apparently some parents didn't find it very appropriate for Jump's target readership. Their children.

It's true. I don't advertise my comic with ads on other websites. Nor do I have ads on my comic site. I have no idea what my readership numbers are. But I make my comic on my terms on my website. And if other people find it and enjoy it, and tell others about it, that's awesome!

Agreed. I'm not saying make 'em wholesale with no care. Marvel should put new characters through the grinder---let the readership decide if they're a hit or not. They're not gonna make it through unless they have the chops. To me, race swapping says x-race can't handle the grind.

“How do we explain the explosive growth in manga readership? I think a lot of it is American comics refugees. The best Superman story out there now? It’s One Punch Man, sorry!” - Michael Gombos
