Roman legionaries constructing a marching camp. Stunning portrayal by the incomparable Peter Connolly

My reconstruction of the iron helmet remains found at #BurghCastle #Roman fort, worn by a cavalry soldier stationed at the fort about 1700 years ago. He was probably a member of the Stablesian Horse, an auxiliary unit recruited from a region of Yugoslavia. #RomanFortThursday

Birdoswald (possibly called Banna) sits astride #HadriansWall. For a time it was garrisoned by the 1st cohort of Dacians (present day Romania). Photos include the graffito of a horse well hidden in the southern side of the fort. #RomanFortThursday

Here's something a bit unusual for #RomanFortThursday: the Late Roman fort(ress) at Alexandria, variously known as Parembole or Nicopolis. Nothing to see now, but it does play a prominent role in the Battle of Alexandria in 1801: it is visible in plans & paintings of the battle.
Images of the #Roman mansio of Alfoldean #WestSussex reconstructed by the late great Victor Ambrus
The 3 days spent digging here in 2005 for @thetimeteam were very (very very very) wet, but Victor kept drawing, sketching and painting throughout

#RomanFortThursday #Caister on Sea, #Roman fort, #Norfolk. This is my reconstruction of what the south gatehouse may have looked like.
