Evidence of one of Earth’s oldest known forests dates back approximately 385-million years. The Devonian-age Gilboa fossil forest of Schoharie County, New York, is characterized by extensive impressions of tree root systems and even a few fossil tree stumps.

Dr. Steven Chamberlain donated a collection of specimens from the Balmat Mining District in St. Lawrence County, NY. The NYSM now has the most complete & significant Balmat mineral collection that can be used for exhibitions, research, & education.

Theodore C. Baim (1910 - 1996) was a self-taught artist & botanist who illustrated plants to aid in his learning. He was able to capture the beauty of the often-overlooked mosses & lichens in beautiful watercolor paintings, fifty of which are housed in the Museum.
