the newer style is mostly inspired by far later nes games like gimmick, shatterhand, kirby's adventure and mighty final fight, which had (except KA) shorter lenghts

I have a huge 💙 for the 8bit era dirty & creatively detailed style. Creative use of dithering and nice sharp contrasts make them both beautiful and easy to read on the play-ability end. Games like Batman titles, Shatterhand, Vice: Project Doom, and a bunch of the Natsume games.

I always liked this image from Shatterhand. All the graphics in NES games are built from 8x8 tiles but palettes are applied to backgrounds in 16x16 blocks. If you slap a grid on it, you can see how effectively Natsume worked within this constraint. Almost looks 16-bit!
