Syd Mead about Aliens (1986): "I originally designed a spherical ship. Cameron corrected me with the comment that the model had to go past the lens, without pulling focus. He sketched a kind of submarine affair, but long and flat. I followed that cue and came up with the SULACO".

The Sulaco from Aliens has a special spot in my heart, ANY battlecruiser from the homeworld series (hiigaran/kushan, Taiidan or vaygr).

Either way none of those are obscure, that has to go to thecetacyborg battleship from the Metabarons, a giant living battlecruiser whale.
