Captain Kenneth Keith Forbes paints this scene, CWM 19710261-0142, of a Canadian 6 in howitzer supporting British troops in the attack on Thiepval #OTD Jul 16 1916, during the Somme offensive. Note lack of ear protection, causing deafness in many #WWI vets https://t.co/nYtddoTvsv

105 years ago today the composer, folk song collector and morris dancer was killed on the Somme. He was buried by his comrades, but his grave was later lost. He is remembered at the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing.

In May 1918 he had an exhibit of his war work in Agnew’s. Orpen, connected, was able to have his work bypass the censor. In a typical example of his generosity he gave all his work to the UK & it is now in the War Museum. La Boiselle (1917), Thiepval (1917) & Mine Crater (1917)
