As a young Assistant Editor of Horn Book, I first encountered the work of and fell in love with his whimsy, vibrant line, and understanding of children. We all miss him, his grace, his humor, his storytelling genius. At least, we still have the books.

Tomie DePaola was a light. I met him and heard him speak often: a bonus of living in New England. He was infectiously enthusiastic, a wee bit sarcastic, and utterly open to helping others. Kids will be reading his books forever, and so he lives on. 💙📚💙
