I think the stop motion one had this sort of ugly off beat quirkiness to it. fitting for its era. I get why they changed it but they made it something so GENERIC and TOOTHLESS. this one from like 2014 keeps the freakiness while also updating it which is a happy medium to me

This is the same problem I had with the light fury from httyd 3. They wanted her to be based by a snow leopard by adding spots, but they removed her scales and add glitter. Now she looks like a glittery beluga whale dragon and more slender than Toothless.
