Not really? Watchmen was first published as 12 chapter mini series, even before TPBs were a thing and now is a GN. Same thing happened with Berlin, The Eternaut and Maus. Eisner was a genius using GN to make comics recognized in bookstores but today is just a name

Just finished reading Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles vol.3 (as in the new Urban Legends TPBs 1 & 2 that finally conclude the series). Even though it's not considered canon, I really enjoyed the stories and loved the artwork. Can recommend!
