He wanted a sort of sepia background that is pretty common in classical underpainting so I went and gave it that more textured, brushstroke look.

If anyone is curious, here is a step-by-step how I painted the Emperor of Mankind from 40K. In this case, I paint a bit similar to how a 3D software-engine would render. I start with an underpainting/sketch, and then try to hit a "ambient diffuse" checkpoint before adding light.
