Day 11 Here we come a-wassailing
Among the leaves so green,
Here we come a-wand'ring
So fair to be seen.
Love and joy come to you,
And to you your wassail, too,
And God bless you, and send you
A Happy New Year,
And God send you a Happy New Year.
Mari Lwyd is a wassailing custom of South Wales; a decorated horse skull over a sack cloth. The men would carry her to local homes, where they would request entry through song and banter. If successful, the team would be permitted entry and given food and drink.

In Wales there is a wassailing folk custom using a macabre hobby horse called the Mari Lwyd. The festive horse skeleton travels door-to-door and challenges people to “pwnco” a rhyming battle of wits.

In Somerset folklore, the Apple Tree Man was the name given to the spirit in the oldest tree in the orchard, where the orchard's fertility is thought to reside. Legends say wassailing the tree with cider might convince him to tell you where to find treasure. #FolkloreThursday

Wassailing the apple trees takes place in the West Country, where there is cider-making. Traditionally held on Old Twelfth Night, 17th Jan, it is the custom of drinking & singing to the health of the trees so they yield plenty in the autumn.
