I even went ahead and altered the base sketch to try and line it up to the final, but it wasn't possible

Obv the pose is the same but there's little differences:
The extra quill underneath his leg, the length of his quills being shortened and widened, his face being wider, etc.

Honestly disagree and I can tell you most people from the 90s would've disagreed with you too lmao
You also need to factor in that Sonic's fans were growing up and the audience was widening even further. These designs were made to compensate for that

When you're angry, your eyes tend to narrow due to the pressure from your eyebrows and subcutaneous fat, similar to how a Super Saiyan's eyes appear. So, when you try to widen your eyes, your eyebrows also become relaxed, and the feeling of anger dissipates.

I'm widening the output space. Taking a chance on getting a few "bad" iterations in favor or more variation.

"Hehe, dad, I have a game."

"Yes, darling? We're leaving in a few minutes."

"I know, I know. The game's called, 'Where Did Miha Hide the Car Keys'!"

"Where are the car keys—"
It dawns on him as his eyes widen.

*poses dramatically* "Hehe, good luck!!"

Scottish lore for

My late grandmother said her native Galloway was the last stronghold of the Fae. In 1850 a hawthorn tree halted the widening of the road between Glenluce and Newton Stewart because it was faerie property.

The stream widened into a little pool. It was deeper there. It came up to above Alfie’s knees, but he and Mum were brave explorers and didn’t care about a little thing like wet shorts.

"And as she widened her eyes in shock, their lips locked. Unlike that night one month ago, this time, Shin initiated. A biting sort of kiss. Of yearning, of impulse, of hunger. It was a kiss with a ferocity she wasn't familiar with."

Dunno, it's weird since those are there for your own decision making, I get that before there wasn't a lot of tags on sites but now they're being used more! Even tokyopop is adding them to their descriptions- My eyes widened so fast when I read this warning 🤣
