Shen says it himself that he does this only because his father would've wanted him to. He is constantly berated by everyone for being terrible at his Eye of Twilight job (mostly by Akali and Mayym). Even Yevnai tells Zed that Shen hates being in this position.

No problem! For what it's worth Zed was in love with the same woman Yevnai and shared a kiss with her (to piss off Shen and Kusho) and it's implied he still cares for her but she doesn't love him anymore and has moved on but he hasn't really.

He does actually! In the Zed comic he seems to really like Yevnai (who is in an arranged marriage with him) and Zed makes fun of him for it. Shafer said somewhere on the reddit AMA that he did love her even though she loved Zed (and was briefly with him)

He would! He can be so sweet, in the comic he is really nice and as a kid he is so flustered about that whole arranged marriage with Yevnai, he is such a pure heart but is unaware that he hurt people who loved him (like Akali) because he wants so bad to do what's his duty :(
