On the neck guard of this remarkable 1stC AD Roman helmet found near the Rhine are the engraved names of its ancient previous owners. Titus and Statorius from Antonius Fronto's century had both owned this helmet suggesting it saw years of service and quite possibly a few battles.

A bronze Roman sword belt decoration dated 3rdC AD. The inscription reads, LG X FR FEL: belonging to the Tenth Legion Fretensis Felix (the fortunate). The provenance is unclear, possibly lost in battle or a votive offering of some kind. Now in the Israel museum, Jerusalem.

A small bronze shield decorated with silver found in the gladiator barracks at Pompeii. Depicted in the centre is Medusa encircled by laurel wreaths for victory. It possibly belonged to a gladiator called a hoplomachus who fought with a lance and small shield like this one.

A dagger and pair of greaves (shin guards) belonging to a gladiator discovered at Pompeii. The bronze greaves depict Jupiter and Neptune and the dagger is decorated with ivory. All to enhance the spectacle and theatrics of the Roman gladiatorial bloodsports.

An arrow shaft fragment made from reed with the feather fletching still attached discovered in the 1930s at the Roman town of Dura-Europos, Syria. Possibly shot during the siege of 256AD that ended with the town falling to the Persians and being abandoned shortly after.

Roman cavalry helmet dated 3rdC AD found in Heddernheim, Germany. Made from iron with bronze decorations including four snakes it would've been highly polished with a large peak and cheek pieces (now missing). Helmet on display in the Frankfurt Archaeological Museum.

A gladiator helmet discovered at Pompeii dated 79AD. Known as a Secutor 'chaser' and armed similar to the Murmillo he fought the Retiarius who used a net and trident. The crest was smooth to slip out the net and the two small eye holes prevented the trident stabbing the face.

A double ridge helmet dated around 6thC BC, excavated from a burial in Austria. This Hallstatt type helmet was worn mainly by Celts and Etruscans and had two small hooks front and back to hold a crest between the ridges. Now in the natural history museum, Vienna.

A large 1stC barrel found at the fortress of Oberaden, Germany. Pulled by Ox and cart along the Roman roads this huge barrel would've been filled with wine for the legion stationed there. Archaeologists also found pepper at the site coming all the way from India.

A horse's face guard (chamfron) found at Vindolanda, England. Dated around the 2ndC it originally had eye guards and brass studs in patterns. Worn during horse sports (Hippika gymnasia) the Romans would display incredible skills while wearing face masks and full decorations.
