The Houses of Commons & Lords dispute over the Self-Denying Ordnance.
Lords declare they have so far given a 'yielding Compliance' to almost all desires of the Commons. But no amendment or alteration can make the Ordnance acceptable to them.

On this day 1641, Anthony van Dyck died.
His equestrian portrait was to be purposefully placed at the end of a long gallery in St. James Palace (red dot).
To those approaching through two doorways, it would seem as if the king was riding to meet them!

Following a meeting at Lieutenant-General Oliver Cromwell's house, Cornet Joyce is told to seize the King & bring him to the army.
Joyce refuses to specify who has sanctioned the move.
General Thos Fairfax writes that it 'had been without his Privity'.

It's a shame there isn't a portrait of James VI and his family, considering there were numerous artists he patronised at the time. It could have captured the essence of the new Stuart royal family. This is the closest from the National Portrait Gallery.

📅#OTD 1649. The English Parliament orders that the late King's sons, Charles & James, and 13 others who have been plotting or assisting the rebellion in Ireland shall:
'die without mercy, wherever they shall be found within the limits of this nation'.

Having crossed the Tyne, the Scots occupy the town as a base. The royalist Marquis of Newcastle pursues, but is unable to engage them in battle due to heavy snow.
A reputed Scottish cannon was later dredged from the river & placed in local Barnes Park.

The body of King Charles I is interred in silence. The Book of Common Prayer having been forbidden.
Plans by his son, Charles II, for a £70,000 solemn funeral, mausoleum & monument (right) came to nothing - the location of the body having been lost.
