29 March 1644 was the Battle of Cheriton (Alresford) in Hampshire. Sir William Waller's Parliamentarians defeated Royalist forces under the Earl of Forth and Lord Hopton, ending their advance in the south-east.

Nothing that unusual in recycling the imagery... spot the difference here... 4 different men (Verney, K. Digby, Cromwell, Haselrige) 3 different artists (Van Dyck, Walker & Unknown) over 10 years... 🙂

24 February 1655 a proclamation was issued banning horse racing for 6 months. The ban was introduced as it was feared Royalist agents were using races as a cover to meet, but was only temporary as Oliver Cromwell was rather fond of horse racing!

It's the famed 'headless horseman' image - another example of recycled 1600s imagery (17thC photoshopping...). Here's the same image by Lombard with Cromwell's head replacing that of Charles; he also did ones with Louis XIV's head on too! 🙂

21 January 1645 the House of Commons voted Sir Thomas Fairfax to become commander-in-chief of Parliament's 'Army New Modelled', with Philip Skippon as his Major-General. A number of Colonels were also appointed.

19 January 1644 the Scots Army of the Covenant under the command of Alexander Leslie, 1st Earl of Leven crossed the River Tweed into England, walking 20 miles knee deep in snow, as allies of the Parliamentary Cause.

13 December 1643 in a surprise attack, Sir William Waller's Parliamentarian forces stormed Alton in Hampshire. The Royalist defenders conducted a last stand in the Church of St Lawrence, which still has scars of the fighting today.
