Double Confession is pretty stunning. Like a Bexhill/Hastings set Brighton Rock full of dodgy dealings at the seaside with a cast to die for. Great see William Hartnell taking a full lead opposite Peter Lorre. He's absolutely spellbinding throughout and a joy to watch.

The Eiger Sanction: beautiful photography and a great John Williams score that lets him really embrace his jazzier elements but otherwise it plays like a Roger Moore Bond film without any of the irony or the wit. Really didn't sit well sadly.

Le Battant is the last of the three films I needed to see with Delon as director. Like the other two, it's brilliant (contrary to reputation). I love his directorial style, his understanding of cities and his clear influence from directors he worked with, Melville especially.

Sturges' The Law And Jake Wade is gorgeous to look at and creates a great deal of drama out of a deadly simple narrative Richard Widmark is at his usual villainous excellence but it's really the framing of its drama in the epic landscapes of Alabama Hills that makes it work.

Pink String And Sealing Wax: morbid but fun Ealing melodrama with some fine performances though not quite as sharp as Robert Hamer's other notable films. Usual brilliance from Mervyn Johns and Googie Withers but nice to see young roles for Gordon Jackson and Valentine Dyall too.

The Squeeze is close to perfection. Gritty, late 70s Notting Hill, tons of amazing performances (Stacy Keach, David Hemmings, Edward Fox and Freddie Star all superb), a nuanced, real portrayal of alcoholism and all wrapped in a taut mix of Sweeney and The Long Good Friday. Bliss.
