On this day in 1812, a Coalition army under Gen. Arthur Wellesley (future Duke of Wellington) defeated a French army under Marshal Auguste de Marmont at the Battle of Salamanca, one of the most significant engagements of the Peninsular War.

On this day in 1810, Louise of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, Queen of Prussia, died suddenly at the age of just 34. She was one of the most memorable characters of the Napoleonic Era.

221 years ago today, Napoleon & Vatican envoys signed the Concordat of 1801, ending the schism between the French revolutionaries and the Catholic Church, which had been a source of violent instability for a decade. It was one of Napoleon's greatest domestic achievements.

In the 1820s, Austrian playwright Franz Grillparzer had one of his works banned by the Habsburg censors. He asked the censor what he had found objectionable, and the censor replied: "Oh, nothing at all. But I thought to myself, 'One can never tell.'"

On this day in 1806, Prime Minister William Pitt died, aged just 46. He was one of Napoleon's worthiest and most implacable enemies. His old rival, Charles James Fox said: "one feels as if there was something missing in the world—a chasm, a blank that cannot be filled."
